Why Is My Water Heater Not Heating Up Despite Resetting the Button?

If your water heater still won’t heat after pressing reset, it likely has a deeper issue. Common causes include sediment buildup, pilot performance problems, gas line issues, worn parts, or a unit near end of life (typical life is about 10 to 15 years). Tankless units may also lose heat from hard-water scale or poor ventilation. A pro can flush sediment, inspect the pilot and gas lines, replace the anode rod, and clean or replace parts as needed.

Quick checks:

  • Note any leaks, rust, or pilot issues.
  • Consider a flush if you haven’t had maintenance recently.
